Shanika Foster
Counselor
Shanika is a first- generation, Caribbean-American educator. Shanika was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and moved to the DMV area to further her educational pursuits. Education has always played an integral role in Shanika’s life as she strived to seek opportunities to advance herself. Shanika pursued her bachelor’s degree at Georgetown University majoring in psychology and minoring in sociology. As a freshman, Shanika noticed the limited access and lack of support many low-income, students of color had when they were applying to college. As a result, Shanika became involved in several prospective student initiatives at Georgetown University, including Hoya Saxa Weekend, GAAP weekend, and GSP mentor programs. These experiences sparked Shanika’s passion and laid the foundation for her interest in a college access career.
After completing her bachelor’s degree, Shanika began a teaching career within the DC public charter school systems. During her time as a teacher, Shanika continued to support students of color through their undergraduate experience, serving as an alumni mentor and alumni interviewer for incoming freshmen at Georgetown University. In 2022, Shanika transitioned out of the classroom into an official college advising role, working as a college counselor for a non-profit within Montgomery County and recently served as a college counselor at a Cristo Rey high school. Shanika has served over 300 high school students and looks forward to continuing her career with CDI.
